How Often Should an Office Be Cleaned?

The right schedule depends on how many people use the space, how hard the kitchen and restrooms get used, and who visits. Here's a practical way to decide.

Short answer

Most offices of 20 to 50 people need cleaning two or three nights a week; offices of 50 to 100 people, or with busy kitchens and restrooms, usually need five. Offices under 20 people with light traffic can often manage with one or two. Restrooms, kitchens and client-facing areas should be handled on every visit.

Clean empty office in early morning light

Start with headcount and use

Office Typical schedule
Under 20 people, light traffic 1 to 2 nights a week
20 to 50 people 2 to 3 nights a week
50 to 100 people, or busy kitchens and restrooms 5 nights a week
Client-facing lobbies and conference rooms Touched every visit, whatever the schedule

These are starting points. A 30-person office with a heavily used kitchen may need more; a 60-person hybrid office where half the team is remote on Fridays may need less.

What gets cleaned how often

Every visit

  • Trash and recycling
  • Restrooms: clean, disinfect, refill
  • Kitchen counters, sinks and tables
  • High-touch points
  • Client-facing areas

Weekly

  • Dust desks, ledges and partitions
  • Vacuum and mop all floors, including low-traffic areas
  • Appliance fronts and interiors

Monthly to quarterly

  • High dusting and vents
  • Baseboards and door frames
  • Interior glass and partitions
  • Deep clean of restrooms and kitchens

Split schedules

Many offices get the best value from a split: a full clean two or three nights a week, and a short kitchen, restroom and trash reset on the other nights. You get a clean-looking office every morning without paying for full cleans every night.

Signs your schedule is too light

  • The kitchen is a mess by mid-week.
  • Restrooms run out of supplies between visits.
  • Staff start cleaning up themselves.
  • Dust is visible on surfaces people touch.

Related questions

Does a small office need nightly cleaning?

Usually not. Many small offices do well with one to three nights a week, as long as restrooms and client-facing areas are handled every visit.

What's a split schedule?

Full cleans on some nights and a short kitchen, restroom and trash reset on others. It keeps the office looking clean daily at a lower cost.

How often should carpets and floors be deep cleaned?

It depends on traffic. High-traffic offices benefit from periodic deep cleaning, scheduled at the walkthrough.

Should hybrid offices be cleaned less often?

Often, yes. If the office is lightly used on certain days, the schedule can follow actual use rather than the calendar.

How often should office carpets be deep cleaned?

It depends on foot traffic. High-traffic areas need it more often, and the frequency should be set at the walkthrough.

Is daytime cleaning an option?

Some offices prefer a daytime porter or daytime restroom checks. Discuss it at the walkthrough if your office needs it.
